Cricket Australia will stage a Big Bash League (BBL) match outside Australia for the first time, with the opening game of the 2026-27 season set to be played in Chennai. The Melbourne Renegades will face the Perth Scorchers at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on December 12.

The announcement was made jointly by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during an event at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The fixture is part of the broader ‘G’day Namaste’ initiative aimed at strengthening ties between India and Australia.

Cricket Australia officials expect strong support from local fans, pointing to the league’s growing popularity in India.

“We know there are incredibly passionate cricket fans all over India, but particularly in Chennai. Everyone we’ve spoken to has been really optimistic that we should expect a good crowd,” Alistair Dobson, Cricket Australia’s executive general manager of Big Bash Leagues, told reporters, per a report by NDTV.

He also highlighted the tournament’s existing fan base in the country.

“What has become clear to us as we’ve built this event out is just how popular the BBL already is in India. It’s got nothing on the IPL, obviously, but the BBL is well-liked and respected. We can’t wait to see all the fans turn out, albeit I suspect there’ll be a fair chunk of yellow in the crowd,” he added.

Renegades to play designated home game

The December 12 contest will officially count as a home fixture for the Melbourne Renegades. To accommodate the international trip, both teams will receive additional time to travel back to Australia before their next league matches.

The full schedule for the 2026-27 Big Bash League season is expected to be released next week.

Several teams showed interest

According to reports, multiple BBL franchises expressed interest in participating in the overseas fixture. However, scheduling challenges meant not every team formally entered the process.

Dobson said Cricket Australia worked closely with all clubs before finalising the teams.

“We looked across all our clubs and worked with them on what would need to be true for them to play in this game,” he explained.

“It was a combination of a range of factors, including scheduling and different commercial considerations. Fitting this game into a hectic BBL schedule, for those teams to be able to travel back to the Australian market and continue on a successful BBL campaign, was important.”

The Chennai match is expected to open a new chapter for the Big Bash League as it takes one of Australia’s premier T20 competitions to an international venue for the first time.
