After months of uncertainty, Jana Nayagan, the much-awaited film starring Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, is finally set to hit theatres. The film has received an ‘A’ certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), clearing the way for its theatrical release later this month.
According to PTI, industry sources confirmed on Thursday that the H Vinoth directorial has completed the certification process after a prolonged delay. The film is now expected to release on July 24, nearly seven months after its original Pongal release plan.

What delayed the release?
Jana Nayagan was initially scheduled to arrive in cinemas on January 9, 2026, ahead of the Pongal festival. It was submitted to the CBFC on December 19, 2025, for certification.
Reports said the makers carried out changes suggested by the examining committee, after which the film was initially considered for a ‘U/A’ certificate. However, the process came to a halt when a member of the committee reportedly raised concerns that certain portions of the film could hurt public sentiments. The matter was subsequently referred to the revising committee, delaying the certification.
With no decision coming before the planned release, the production house approached the court. The CBFC later informed the court that the film had been sent to the revising committee following an internal complaint.
An ‘A’ certificate means the film can only be viewed by audiences aged 18 years and above.
Release set for July 24
A source from the Tamil Nadu Film Distributors’ Association said the film is likely to be screened in around 1,000 theatres across Tamil Nadu from July 24.

The film’s long wait for release was also marked by a major piracy setback. In April, several scenes from Jana Nayagan surfaced online, with HD prints of the full film reportedly appearing on piracy websites. The leak came during the prolonged certification process and just before Vijay formally entered electoral politics ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Police have arrested nine people in connection with the case so far.
