Andy Burnham is set to become the United Kingdom’s next Prime Minister after receiving the backing of an overwhelming majority of Labour MPs in the party’s leadership contest.

At the close of the first day of nominations to replace Keir Starmer as Labour leader, Burnham had secured the support of 322 out of the party’s 403 Members of Parliament, putting him firmly on course to take over the leadership.

The tally leaves no realistic opportunity for another candidate to enter the race, as any challenger would need 81 nominations to qualify.

Andy Burnham thanks party colleagues

Following the announcement of the nomination count, Burnham expressed gratitude to Labour MPs who backed his leadership bid.

“Deeply grateful” for the support he had received, Burnham said it “reflects a shared belief that Britain needs a new approach to politics”.

He also outlined the direction he hopes to take if confirmed as party leader.

“That is the circuit breaker I am offering: power out of Westminster, an economy rewired for ordinary people, and good growth in every postcode,” he said in a statement published online cited by Hindustan Times.

“I want to thank every colleague who has nominated me for their commitment to that vision.”

Leadership race nearing conclusion

With 322 nominations already secured, Burnham needs only one additional vote to become the sole candidate in the contest. Crossing that threshold would make it mathematically impossible for any rival to gather the minimum 81 nominations required to stand.

According to Labour convention, outgoing leader Keir Starmer is not expected to participate in the nomination process, meaning the available pool of nominations is further reduced.

As things stand, no late challenger is expected to emerge before nominations close.

When will Andy Burnham take over?

The Labour leadership contest is scheduled to conclude on Friday, July 17. If no other candidate enters the race, Burnham will become the party’s new leader at the close of the contest, HT reported.

He is then expected to formally take office as the UK’s prime minister on Monday, July 20, the next working day.

The leadership transition would mark a change at the top of both the Labour Party and the British government, with Burnham preparing to succeed Keir Starmer after securing decisive support from his parliamentary colleagues.
