US President Donald Trump has said that he has already directed the American military to be prepared for a massive response if Iran carries out any attempt to assassinate him. The warning came amid renewed tensions between Washington and Tehran, with fresh calls for revenge emerging during funeral ceremonies for Iran’s slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Trump’s remarks have raised a key question. If Iran were to target the US president, would America automatically launch military strikes?
Trump warns Iran of unprecedented military response
Posting on his social media platform on Saturday, Trump claimed Iran had threatened “to assassinate or attempt to assassinate” him. He also issued a stark warning to Tehran.

“1,000 missiles are Locked and Loaded and aimed at the Islamic Republic of Iran, with thousands more to immediately follow, should the Iranian Government act on its threat.”

The statement followed funeral events for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, where mourners were seen carrying posters demanding the deaths of Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
A few hours later, Iran’s current Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, repeated that the country would continue pursuing revenge.
“We pledge to take revenge for the pure blood of you and all the martyrs of these two wars from the criminal and disgraceful killers. This revenge is the will of our nation and must certainly be carried out.”
Would the US automatically attack Iran?
Despite Trump’s warning, US law does not provide for an automatic military strike if a sitting president is assassinated.
Instead, constitutional procedures would immediately take effect. Under the 25th Amendment and the Presidential Succession Act of 1947, Vice President JD Vance would become president and commander-in-chief if Trump were killed.

That means the decision on any military response would rest entirely with Vance. He could choose to follow Trump’s previously issued military instructions, modify them or decide on a completely different course of action.
What do US continuity plans cover?
The United States maintains extensive continuity-of-government plans designed to keep the federal government functioning during catastrophic events, including a nuclear attack or other large-scale emergencies affecting Washington.

However, according to an Associated Press report, those contingency plans do not include any automatic retaliatory military action following the death of a president, even if standing military instructions had been issued beforehand.
Could Trump legally leave military instructions?
Garrett M. Graff, author of Raven Rock: The Story of the U.S. Government’s Secret Plan to Save Itself — While the Rest of Us Die, said Trump could legally leave military guidance for his successor.

According to Graff, Trump could tell Vance, “If I’m killed, nuke Iran.” He added that such an instruction would “more sense and would be absolutely legal.”
Even so, the final decision would still belong to the new commander-in-chief, who would determine whether to act on those instructions or pursue a different response.
