In the country’s deadliest wildfire in decades, the blaze is moving fast and has ripped through southern Spain.

The wildfire

The fire erupted near Los Gallardos in Almería province and spread rapidly through dry vegetation after being driven by strong winds and scorching heat. Many of those killed were trying to escape the flames. While many victims were found inside burned-out vehicles, others died after fleeing on foot.

More than 150 firefighters, backed by military emergency units, are currently battling the wildfire, while search-and-rescue teams are looking for the missing. Around 1,000 people have been evacuated from nearby communities.

The impact

As of now, the fire has claimed 12 lives and 19 others are missing. Authorities believe that most of the victims are foreign nationals. Four people found inside one vehicle are believed to be British and formal identification is underway.
