Iranian state media has released what it says is the first video showing the damage inside the Tehran compound of late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, with the footage made public on the day he is being laid to rest.

The 35-second clip offers a glimpse of the destruction inside the Imam Khomeini Hussainiya, a hall within Khamenei’s compound that was frequently used for key meetings and public addresses. The video shows collapsed sections of the structure, twisted metal beams and large piles of debris, highlighting the impact of the US-Israeli strikes that killed Khamenei.

Footage released alongside funeral

The release coincides with Khamenei’s burial in his hometown of Mashhad in northeastern Iran. His funeral marks the end of a weeklong procession that passed through several cities, including Tehran and Qom, before continuing to the Iraqi Shia holy cities of Najaf and Karbala.

Khamenei was killed on February 28, the opening day of the US-Israeli war on Iran. Several members of his family, including his 14-month-old granddaughter, were also killed in the strike. His son, Mojtaba Ali Khamenei, who later became Iran’s new Supreme Leader, was injured in the attack.

Fresh military action deepens tensions

The release of the footage comes as tensions between the United States and Iran continue to rise.

On Wednesday, the US military announced another round of strikes on Iran, saying the operation was intended to protect freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz after attacks on commercial ships in the waterway. The action came shortly after US President Donald Trump declared that the interim agreement aimed at ending the conflict was “over”.

The latest escalation has further weakened hopes of converting the June 17 memorandum of understanding into a permanent peace arrangement. Iran later said it had launched attacks on US military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait in response to earlier American strikes on Iranian infrastructure, which Washington said were carried out after attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
