If you still have a Rs 2,000 banknote tucked away, there is no immediate reason to be concerned. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has clarified that these notes continue to be legal tender, even though they were withdrawn from circulation in 2023.
The central bank has also shared fresh figures showing that almost all of the withdrawn notes have already made their way back into the banking system.

Nearly all Rs 2,000 notes have been returned
According to the RBI, 98.47% of the Rs 2,000 banknotes that were in circulation when the withdrawal was announced on May 19, 2023, have now been returned.
The total value of these notes in circulation has fallen sharply from Rs 3.56 lakh crore in May 2023 to Rs 5,451 crore as of April 30, 2026.
Although banks stopped accepting Rs 2,000 notes for exchange and deposit on October 7, 2023, the RBI continues to offer facilities for those who still possess the currency.
What are your options?
People who still have Rs 2,000 notes can continue to use them as valid currency because they remain legal tender.
Those who wish to exchange the notes can visit any of the 19 RBI Issue Offices across the country. These offices also allow customers to deposit the notes directly into their bank accounts.

Another option is to send the notes through India Post. The RBI allows holders to mail Rs 2,000 banknotes from any post office to an RBI Issue Office, where the amount can be credited to the bank account provided by the sender.

Why were the notes withdrawn?
The RBI announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 banknotes from circulation on May 19, 2023, as part of its currency management exercise.
While the denomination is no longer being issued, the notes themselves have not lost their validity. The central bank has continued to maintain facilities for exchange and deposit, ensuring that anyone who still holds the notes has a way to return them.
With only a small fraction of the original stock still in circulation, the latest figures suggest that the withdrawal exercise is now nearing completion, even as the remaining notes continue to be recognised as valid legal tender.
