Actor Suriya believes one of the biggest lessons he learned about fitness came much later than expected. Speaking at a pre-release event for his latest film Veerabhadrudu, the 50-year-old actor admitted that he only understood the importance of diet after turning 25, stressing that what you eat matters far more than how much time you spend exercising.
As per Indian Express quoted in their report, “I started to realise about diet only after 25. The body is not made in the gym; it is made in the kitchen. Whatever gymming you do is no use. We have to zip up our mouths, and then the body changes,” Suriya said.

His remarks have reignited an important conversation about nutrition, with medical experts saying that while exercise is essential, diet remains the foundation of long-term health and fitness.
Why diet becomes more important after your mid-twenties
As per Indian Express reports, Dr Sundar Krishnan, Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, many people can get away with unhealthy eating habits during their teens and early twenties because their metabolism is generally more forgiving.

However, as people enter their mid-twenties, work pressure increases, physical activity often decreases and health issues such as weight gain, fatigue, acidity and poor sleep begin to surface. These changes encourage many adults to pay closer attention to their eating habits and overall lifestyle.
Portion control is just as important as food choices
The doctor explained that one of the simplest yet most effective ways to stay healthy is by practising portion control.

Even nutritious foods can contribute to excessive calorie intake when consumed in large quantities. Eating appropriate portions helps regulate blood sugar, supports digestion, prevents unnecessary weight gain and lowers the risk of obesity, fatty liver disease and Type 2 diabetes.
Experts also point out that many people focus only on eating healthy foods while overlooking how much they consume, which can place unnecessary stress on the body’s metabolism over time.
Building a balanced plate
Instead of following restrictive diets or eliminating entire food groups, doctors recommend creating balanced meals that are easier to maintain in the long run.

A healthy plate should include plenty of vegetables, a quality source of protein, whole grains or other complex carbohydrates and mindful eating habits. Eating slowly also allows the body enough time to recognise fullness, helping prevent overeating.
Healthy habits should begin early
Experts say you do not have to wait until health problems appear before improving your diet. Paying attention to meal timing, food quality and portion sizes early in adulthood can significantly reduce the risk of lifestyle diseases later in life.

Suriya’s simple message serves as a reminder that lasting fitness is not built through intense workouts alone. Consistent healthy eating habits, combined with regular exercise, remain the most effective formula for long-term health.
