England’s FIFA World Cup campaign has suffered a setback after defender Jarell Quansah’s FIFA World Cup ban was confirmed by FIFA’s disciplinary committee. The Bayer Leverkusen defender has received a two-match suspension after being sent off during England’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico. The decision means Quansah will miss Saturday’s quarter-final against Norway and any potential semi-final if England progresses. He will only be eligible to return should England reach the World Cup final on July 19.
Jarell Quansah FIFA World Cup ban leaves Tuchel with defensive concerns
The Jarell Quansah FIFA World Cup ban comes after the defender was shown a straight red card for a high challenge on Mexico’s Jesus Gallardo in the 54th minute. FIFA classified the offence as serious foul play, resulting in an additional one-match suspension alongside the automatic one-game ban.
The Football Association explored the possibility of an appeal but tournament regulations do not allow any challenge against the disciplinary committee’s verdict.
Quansah had stepped into the right-back role after Reece James was ruled out through injury. His absence now leaves England manager Thomas Tuchel with limited options ahead of the crucial knockout fixture.

England likely to rely on returning Reece James
Tuchel is hopeful that Reece James will recover in time for the Norway encounter after missing recent matches with a hamstring injury. If James is unavailable, England could again be forced to reshuffle their defence.
Ezri Konsa finished the match against Mexico at right-back, while Djed Spence remains another option despite being used sparingly during the tournament. Trevoh Chalobah is also capable of filling the position if required.
France’s Clement Turpin has been appointed by FIFA to officiate England’s quarter-final against Norway.

Balogun decision adds to FIFA inconsistency debate
The Jarell Quansah FIFA World Cup ban has reignited debate over FIFA’s disciplinary consistency. United States forward Folarin Balogun also received a red card for serious foul play earlier in the tournament but escaped with only a one-match suspension after FIFA suspended the second game for 12 months.
The decision attracted criticism from several football associations, including UEFA, Belgium and England boss Thomas Tuchel. France also unsuccessfully appealed against Michael Olise’s yellow card after the Balogun ruling.
England will now hope the Jarell Quansah FIFA World Cup ban does not derail their ambitions as they prepare for a difficult quarter-final against Erling Haaland’s Norway.
