Former district judge Giribala Singh entered Bhopal Central Jail on Tuesday as an undertrial in the Twisha Sharma death case. This marks a dramatic reversal for a woman who once presided over court proceedings from the bench.
Singh and her son Samarth were taken into custody at around 3.20 pm after being produced before the court and reached the jail at about 4.30 pm, where routine entry formalities were completed before they were lodged inside the prison complex.

From the bench to barrack life
TOI reported that Singh was assigned undertrial number 71 and placed in the women’s ward. She was kept in the medical section of that ward for security reasons.
Samarth, meanwhile, was assigned prisoner number 1782 and lodged separately in Barrack 4-B.
Both were issued standard jail items, including a plate, bowl, and bedsheet, and were allowed to keep the clothes they arrived in, since undertrials are permitted to wear their own clothing.
An unhurried first night in custody
Singh spent her first night without complaint and slept through the night. She told jail officials that she had nothing to worry about.
The routine jail meal was served around 5.30 pm and included roti, dal, rice, and vegetable curry. She ate very little, if at all, on her first evening in custody.
Every precaution in its proper place
The jail arrangement reflected standard security protocols for undertrials and women inmates.
The women’s ward currently houses around 125 undertrials, and Singh was placed there as undertrial no. 71. A jail official said that “security of each and every inmate is equally important,” adding that the women’s ward has its own security in charge and staff to monitor inmates.
Singh’s placement in the medical section was meant to ensure closer supervision during her custody.
What lies ahead in the Twisha Sharma case?
The custody comes amid an ongoing investigation into the Twisha Sharma case. Previous court proceedings have already drawn attention because of statements made by Singh and her son.
Singh had accused Twisha Sharma’s lawyers of running a media trial and objected to the CBI’s scene recreation. Samarth alleged that a lawyer had assaulted him in court, a charge the lawyer denied.
The case continues to move through judicial process as the CBI probe remains under way.
