Typhoon Maysak has caused massive flooding in southern China, and a new public safety crisis has arisen with the escape of nearly 900 snakes from a snake breeding farm in Hengzhou, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

The floodwaters have ravaged the facility, leaving hundreds of reptiles, including venomous cobras, spreading into nearby villages, reports NDTV.

What has actually happened?

Videos circulating widely on social media show snakes swimming through muddy floodwaters and villagers attempting to drive them away with sticks. The footage has brought worries about flooded homes and disrupted infrastructure among residents who are already facing difficulties. The public has been advised to stay out of the house, not to venture near snakes, and to notify emergency personnel immediately if any snakes are seen.

Emergency teams deployed

Local authorities indicate that the animals were set loose in the neighborhood and that rescuers have been called in to catch the escaped reptiles with special equipment which includes nets and stunners. Hospitals in the affected area have also stocked up their anti-venom supplies and activated their emergency treatment mechanism on account of reports of snake bite cases.

While local officials indicated that many of the escaped snakes are non-venomous, venomous species such as cobras were also among those released, making the situation particularly dangerous.
