A woman from Uttar Pradesh’s Agra has been arrested for allegedly murdering her husband, hiding his body beneath the bathroom floor of their home and pretending for weeks that he had gone missing. Police say the case came to light while they were investigating the disappearance of 44-year-old Surendra Sharma, whose remains were later recovered from inside the couple’s house.

Authorities said the body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the report is received.

Police uncover body during missing person probe

According to police, Surendra Sharma’s brother filed a missing person’s complaint at Sikandra Police Station on May 26 after he could not be traced.

During the investigation, officers noticed inconsistencies in the family’s statements and found suspicious ATM withdrawals from the account linked to the family’s pension. These developments prompted investigators to search the couple’s residence in Renuka Dham Colony in Agra’s Dehtora area.

When police broke open the newly tiled bathroom floor, they recovered skeletal remains believed to be those of Surendra.

ACP Hariparvat Ameesha told ANI, “During the investigation, police found that his wife had killed him and buried the body in their house, covering it with concrete plaster. Legal action followed, the police broke the floor and recovered the body. After completing the inquest proceedings, the body was sent for post-mortem. The accused, Ruby Sharma, is in custody and being interrogated, with further legal steps underway.”

Police suspect husband was drugged before the killing

Investigators believe Ruby Sharma mixed a large quantity of sleeping pills into a bowl of kheer before serving it to her husband. Police allege Surendra lost consciousness after consuming the dessert.

The couple’s daughters reportedly did not suspect anything unusual because they were used to seeing their father sleep for long hours after drinking alcohol.

Investigators believe Surendra was killed after he became unconscious, though they are waiting for the post-mortem findings to establish the exact cause of death.

Police also said Surendra had been unemployed for some time and struggled with alcoholism. Investigators alleged he frequently demanded money from his wife for alcohol and assaulted her when she refused. Neighbours also told PTI that the couple often argued.

Body allegedly buried beneath bathroom tiles

Police believe the accused dropped her two daughters at Surendra’s brother’s house the following morning before returning home alone. Investigators allege she dug a pit in the bathroom, buried the body beneath the floor, covered it with concrete and installed fresh tiles to hide the crime.

Ruby also reported her husband missing, helping create the impression that he had disappeared.

The alleged murder came under fresh scrutiny after Surendra’s brother noticed cash continuing to be withdrawn from the bank account linked to the family’s pension even after he had been reported missing.

Police probing possibility of accomplices

Deputy Commissioner of Police Syed Ali Abbas said investigators are examining whether anyone else helped carry out the crime or dispose of the body.

As per Hindustan Times report, “It appears a tough task for a woman alone to get the man killed and get the body buried in the house itself. For now, we are still looking for linkages about anyone other than the woman involved in the crime,” he said

Police said Ruby Sharma remains in custody as the investigation continues, while officials await the post-mortem report to determine the exact cause of Surendra Sharma’s death.
