Petrol and diesel prices across India remained unchanged on 8 July, even as global crude oil prices continued to climb amid fresh geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. While international oil markets witnessed renewed volatility, retail fuel prices in major Indian cities stayed stable.

Brent crude rose after posting a sharp gain in the previous session, with investors closely monitoring developments involving the US and Iran.

Brent crude climbs amid renewed Middle East tensions

According to a Reuters report, Brent crude advanced 2.6 per cent to $76.12 per barrel during the opening of Asian trade on Wednesday after surging nearly 3 per cent a day earlier.

The latest rally followed fresh military escalation in the region. The US carried out retaliatory strikes on Iran after attacks targeted commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Among the ships hit were a gas carrier and a Saudi oil tanker in the Persian Gulf.

The Trump administration also revoked the sanctions waiver that had allowed Iran to continue selling oil internationally.

In a post on X, US Central Command said US forces “have begun launching a series of powerful strikes against Iran to impose heavy costs for targeting and attacking commercial shipping.”

Westpac analysts told Reuters that investor concerns over the stability of the peace arrangement resurfaced after the attacks on vessels passing through Hormuz. They added, “Concerns over the inflation outlook were in focus, seeing yields jump higher across the globe.”

Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said, “The automobile manufacturers, as well as the people who service these vehicles, all say there is no difficulty. Why this sudden interest?” He further added, “It is a misrepresentation and I don’t want to use stronger words.”
