Heavy rain and thunderstorms swept across several parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Tuesday, offering much-needed relief from the persistent heat and humidity. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the national capital, warning that more rain is expected through the day, with wet weather likely to continue over the coming days.

According to the IMD, temperatures are expected to stay between 32 degree Celsius and 37 degree Celsius during this period.

IMD forecast for Delhi-NCR

The IMD’s Urban Meteorological Services has issued a district-wise forecast covering all 15 districts of Delhi-NCR. These include North Delhi, South Delhi, New Delhi, Central Delhi, East Delhi, West Delhi, North West Delhi, North East Delhi, South West Delhi, South East Delhi, Shahdara, along with the NCR districts of Faridabad, Gurgaon, Noida and Ghaziabad.

The weather department has issued a “Red” alert for July 7, forecasting moderate rainfall at many places and heavy rain at isolated locations. The advisory also warns of thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds reaching speeds of up to 70 kmph. Another spell of rain is expected later in the night.

Rain likely to continue till July 11

Similar weather conditions are expected on July 8, with light rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds likely during the afternoon.

On July 9, the IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall at isolated places, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds during the morning and forenoon. A fresh spell of very light to light rain is expected at night.

The warning level has been reduced to “Green – No Warning” for July 10 and July 11. However, the forecast still indicates generally cloudy skies with chances of very light to light rain, thunderstorms and lightning during the forenoon or afternoon.

The IMD has classified the probability of these weather events as “Likely”, indicating a 25 to 50 per cent chance of occurrence.

Monsoon advances across more parts of India

The Southwest Monsoon advanced further into parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan and Haryana on Tuesday. The IMD said conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to cover the remaining parts of the North Arabian Sea, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and the rest of the country within the next two to three days.

The weather agency has also warned of extremely heavy rainfall over Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra and Gujarat on July 7, and over Kerala and Karnataka on Tuesday. Similar conditions are expected over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on July 8.

Over the past 24 hours, Lonavala in Madhya Maharashtra recorded 53 cm of rainfall, followed by Wada in Palghar with 43 cm and Silvassa in Dadra and Nagar Haveli with 27 cm.

The IMD has also forecast widespread rainfall across Haryana, Chandigarh and Punjab between July 7 and July 9, while isolated heavy rain is expected over parts of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Moderate flash flood risk has been identified in parts of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Mumbai, Palghar, Pune, Satara, Kolhapur and coastal Karnataka over the next 24 hours. Authorities and rescue agencies have been advised to stay prepared in vulnerable areas.
