Mumbai continued to receive relentless rainfall on Friday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that the city could witness even more intense showers over the next 24 hours. In view of the forecast, the weather agency has placed Mumbai, Thane and Palghar under a red alert for Saturday and Sunday.
The city has already recorded widespread rainfall, leading to waterlogging in several low-lying areas and causing disruptions to road traffic.
IMD forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall in Mumbai
According to the IMD’s district-wise forecast issued on Friday afternoon, Mumbai is expected to receive “heavy to very heavy” rainfall at several locations, with isolated spells of “extremely heavy rain” on July 4 and July 5. The department has categorised the forecast as “very likely”.

The weather office has also predicted gusty winds with speeds of 50 to 60 kmph over Mumbai and its suburbs during the next 24 hours.
Over 70 mm rain recorded in parts of the city
Heavy rain continued through Friday, with multiple neighbourhoods recording significant rainfall within a short period. Civic officials said Supari Tank Municipal School in Bandra received 73.8 mm of rain in five hours, the highest in the city. It was followed by Prabhadevi with 72.2 mm, Bandra West with 70.8 mm, and Parel with 69.4 mm.
The city had been experiencing continuous showers since Friday morning, with intermittent heavy spells leading to flooding in several pockets.
Waterlogging, traffic delays but transport services continue
Authorities said Metro services, suburban trains and BEST buses continued to operate despite the rain. However, commuters reported slow-moving traffic and delays on parts of the suburban railway network.

Officials also said heavy showers had persisted since around Thursday midnight. Waterlogging was reported from areas including Dadar, Andheri, Goregaon and Parel, although the accumulated water had largely receded by Friday morning. Rainfall briefly eased during the early hours before becoming heavier again after 8 am.
BMC records over 100 mm rainfall in 24 hours
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the city recorded more than 100 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Friday. The island city received an average of 126 mm, while the eastern and western suburbs recorded 110 mm and 114 mm, respectively.

Among individual locations, Wadi Bunder recorded 150.2 mm of rainfall, followed by Malabar Hill with 145.8 mm and Sandhurst Road with 140.8 mm. In the western suburbs, Malpa Dongari Municipal School in Andheri logged 136.6 mm, while Powai recorded 124 mm, the highest in the eastern suburbs.

Two rain-related deaths reported this week
The ongoing spell of heavy rain has also turned fatal. A man died after falling into a manhole in Chandivali on Thursday, becoming the second rain-related death reported this week. Earlier, on Tuesday, an 11-year-old boy lost his life after a tree collapsed onto his school bus in Chembur.
