Unique design keeps Kolkata Metro distinct

One of the defining features of the Kolkata Metro new rakes is their unique engineering design. Unlike metro systems elsewhere, Kolkata Metro uses a combination of Broad Gauge bogies and Meter Gauge coach shells, making its rolling stock exclusive in the global metro landscape.

ICF was also responsible for manufacturing the first 18 Kolkata Metro trains, which were equipped with DC propulsion systems and operated without air conditioning. Those pioneering rakes have now been retired after completing their prescribed service life.

Between 2010 and 2013, ICF delivered another batch of 13 air-conditioned rakes fitted with DC propulsion technology supplied by BHEL following the extension of the corridor from Tollygunge to Kavi Subhas.

Netaji Bhavan station escalator replacement begins

Alongside the induction of Kolkata Metro new rakes, Metro Railway has also started replacing the mezzanine-to-surface escalator at Netaji Bhavan Metro station on the Blue Line.

The escalator connecting the Jadubabu Bazar Gate will remain closed from July 9, 2026, until the installation of a new unit is completed. Officials expect the work to take around six weeks.

During this period, passengers will continue to have access to the station through the staircase located beside the escalator. Metro authorities have assured commuters that alternative access arrangements will remain available throughout the replacement work.

The arrival of Kolkata Metro new rakes, coupled with ongoing infrastructure upgrades, reflects the organisation’s continued efforts to modernise services and improve the commuting experience for passengers across the network.
