Sanju Samson’s omission from India’s T20I squad for the upcoming Zimbabwe series sparked criticism from fans, many of whom questioned why the wicketkeeper-batter had been left out despite his recent performances. However, the BCCI has clarified that Samson has only been rested as part of workload management, with the selectors also looking to test the team’s bench strength during the tour.

Sanju Samson rested as part of workload management

Samson’s absence from the squad led to widespread debate on social media, with many accusing the selectors of dropping him unfairly. Responding to the criticism, a senior BCCI official said people should “do their homework” before reacting to the selection.

A senior source told PTI, “Why is this surprising that Sanju has been rested for Zimbabwe? People who are saying this should know Sanju is in the Asian Games squad in September. So those who are criticising the selection committee can do a bit of homework. What’s the point of carrying Samson when he won’t play? He is a senior guy.”

The official also stressed that Samson remains firmly in India’s T20 plans and that his omission should not be viewed as a demotion or loss of confidence from the selectors.

Zimbabwe series to test India’s bench strength

The BCCI said the Zimbabwe tour provides an ideal opportunity to give younger players exposure at the international level. With a packed calendar ahead, the selectors are keen to build a larger pool of players by rotating the squad.

Punjab wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh has earned his maiden India call-up and will replace Samson in the squad. The management believes the series will help assess emerging talent while allowing experienced players to recover.

The board has maintained that the decision is part of a long-term strategy rather than a reflection of Samson’s performances. Once his scheduled break is over, the 31-year-old is expected to return for India’s upcoming T20 assignments.
