Brendon McCullum steps down after changing England’s Test identity
When McCullum joined England in 2022, the Test team was searching for direction after a prolonged run of disappointing performances. Together with captain Ben Stokes, he encouraged players to abandon conservative cricket and embrace an attacking mindset regardless of match situations.
The philosophy produced remarkable victories, dramatic run chases, and a fresh identity that attracted praise across the cricketing world. Under his guidance, England became one of the most exciting Test teams to watch, consistently playing positive cricket even in difficult situations.
ECB Chief Executive Richard Gould thanked McCullum for transforming the Test side, saying his contribution had revived English cricket during an exciting period and helped lay a strong foundation for the future.

White-ball responsibilities remain unchanged
While Brendon McCullum steps down from the Test role, his work with England’s limited-overs teams will continue. England recently climbed to the top of the ICC T20I rankings after defeating India and also reached the semifinals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup earlier this year.
England Men’s Managing Director Rob Key described McCullum’s influence as lasting far beyond victories, crediting him with creating an environment where players enjoyed representing England while developing the next generation of international stars.
The ECB believes maintaining continuity in the white-ball setup will help England remain competitive across global tournaments.

England begin search for new Test coach
Speaking after the announcement, McCullum admitted he was disappointed to leave the Test position but respected the ECB’s decision. He thanked the players, coaching staff, and supporters who backed the team throughout an unforgettable journey.
The ECB will now begin the process of identifying a successor capable of taking England into the next phase while preserving the attacking mindset established during the Bazball era.
With the Ashes approaching and England possessing a talented core led by Ben Stokes, the challenge for the next coach will be maintaining the standards set during McCullum’s four-year reign. The impact of Brendon McCullum’s departure may mark the end of an era, but his influence on England’s Test cricket philosophy is likely to remain for years to come.
