South Carolina is preparing for an unusual and accelerated Senate succession process after Senator Lindsey Graham died overnight Saturday following what his staff described as a “brief and sudden illness.” He was 71.
Graham had recently won the Republican nomination for a sixth term, but his death has now turned a normally routine re-election cycle into a fast-moving contest over both an interim appointment and the ballot line for November.

A vacancy meets the letter of the law
Under South Carolina law, Governor Henry McMaster will appoint someone to serve temporarily because Graham died more than 100 days before the 2026 general election.
That appointee will remain in office until January 2027, after the general election winner is sworn in.
The state will also hold a special primary to choose the Republican nominee for the ballot. Filing is set for July 21 to July 28, the special primary for August 11, and a runoff, if needed, two weeks later.
The winner will then face Democratic nominee Dr. Annie Andrews in November.

Whispers abound, yet no name is spoken
The appointment decision rests with McMaster, but President Donald Trump signaled on Meet the Press that he already has someone in mind.
“I have somebody that I think would be great,” Trump said, while declining to name the person. He added that McMaster would “do the right thing.”
Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette is seen as a leading possibility because of her relationship with McMaster and Trump’s earlier backing of her gubernatorial bid, while Rep.
Nancy Mace and Rep. Ralph Norman have both told CNN they have not decided whether they will run. Joe Wilson has publicly pushed back against speculation that he could be the interim pick.

Who gets Lindsey Graham’s Senate seat after his death?
The vacancy has also reopened the political calculation for Democrats, who had already nominated Andrews to challenge Graham.
The recent polling had placed her within single digits of Graham before his death, but the paper said the unexpected opening could change how Democrats approach the race.
Cook Political Report still rated the seat Solid Republican, with South Carolina’s partisan voting index at R+8, underscoring that Republicans remain favored even as the field resets.
