WhatsApp is introducing a new privacy feature that will allow users to chat without sharing their phone numbers. Ahead of a wider rollout expected later this year, the messaging platform has started rolling out WhatsApp username reservations, giving eligible users the chance to secure a unique handle in advance.
The new WhatsApp username feature will let users start conversations using a username instead of their mobile number, offering an extra layer of privacy. Announcing the update in an official blog post on Monday, WhatsApp said the rollout will happen gradually over the coming months.
WhatsApp username reservations begin
WhatsApp has started allowing eligible users to reserve their preferred usernames before the feature becomes available to everyone. According to the company, the early reservation process is necessary because WhatsApp now has more than three billion users worldwide.

The WhatsApp username option will be entirely optional. Once the feature is available, users who enable it can choose to share their username instead of revealing their phone number when starting a conversation with someone for the first time.
How to reserve your WhatsApp username
Users can check whether the WhatsApp username feature is available by updating the app to the latest version and navigating to Settings > Account > Username. WhatsApp said users will receive an in-app notification when the feature becomes available in their country.
If your preferred WhatsApp username has already been claimed, the platform will provide a built-in username generator that suggests alternative unique handles.
WhatsApp privacy feature aims to reduce spam
The company said it will not introduce a searchable username directory, unlike many social media platforms. Instead, users will only be able to message someone if they already know that person’s exact username.
According to WhatsApp, this approach is designed to reduce spam and unwanted messages while giving users greater control over who can contact them.
WhatsApp is also introducing an optional username key that users can share separately for an added layer of protection. The company said this additional verification feature will help users decide who can initiate conversations using their username.

WhatsApp usernames to benefit creators and businesses
The new WhatsApp username feature is also expected to help creators, businesses and organisations maintain a consistent online identity.
WhatsApp said eligible users will be able to reserve the same username they already use on Instagram or Facebook, making it easier to keep the same branding across Meta’s platforms.
The company clarified that WhatsApp usernames are completely optional, and users who prefer sharing their phone numbers can continue using the app as they do now.
WhatsApp also confirmed there will be no public directory or recommendation system, ensuring usernames remain private unless users choose to share them. The phased rollout has already begun, and users will receive an in-app notification when the WhatsApp username feature becomes available in their region.
