Heavy rain returned to Kolkata on Sunday morning as a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal strengthened into a well-marked low-pressure system. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued rain alerts for Kolkata and several districts of South Bengal, with very heavy rainfall expected in some places. Gusty winds are also likely to accompany the showers, while rough sea conditions have prompted authorities to warn fishermen against venturing into the sea.

Kolkata weather today: Cloudy skies, rain and gusty winds likely 

The day began with overcast skies across Kolkata, while several parts of the city witnessed light showers. According to the IMD, the city is expected to remain mostly cloudy throughout Sunday.

Light to moderate rainfall is likely at many places, with the possibility of thunderstorms and gusty winds during the day.

The minimum temperature in Kolkata was recorded at 27.0 degrees Celsius, which is 0.3 degrees above normal. The maximum temperature is expected to touch 33.0 degrees Celsius, around 0.4 degrees above normal. 

Heavy to very heavy rain forecast for several South Bengal districts

The weather office has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across parts of South Bengal on Sunday.

An orange alert has been issued for:

South 24 Parganas

Purba Medinipur

Paschim Medinipur

Jhargram

Purulia

Bankura

These districts are likely to receive very heavy rainfall during the day.

Heavy rain warnings are also in place for Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, Purba Bardhaman and Paschim Bardhaman.

Apart from the rain, gusty winds reaching 40 to 50 kmph may affect Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas.

Light to moderate rainfall is also expected across the remaining districts of South Bengal.

Rain likely to continue next week

The IMD has indicated that the spell of rain is unlikely to end anytime soon. Showers are expected to continue across South Bengal into next week as the low-pressure system remains active.

Fishermen advised not to venture into the sea

The low-pressure system has made the sea rough along the Bengal coast. In view of the prevailing conditions, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until conditions improve.

North Bengal weather update

Heavy rainfall is not expected in North Bengal until Monday. However, several districts may experience light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.

The weather pattern is expected to change after Monday. Rainfall activity is likely to increase, and Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar may come under heavy rain alerts in the coming days.
