A fresh low-pressure system is set to develop over the Bay of Bengal on July 3, bringing the possibility of widespread rain across south Bengal over the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts later this week. At the same time, coastal areas remain under close watch due to rough sea conditions.

Fishermen have also been advised to exercise caution as the sea is expected to remain turbulent.

Kolkata weather today: Light to moderate rain likely 

Kolkata began Thursday under partly cloudy skies, with little sunshine through the morning. According to the IMD, light to moderate rain is expected in the city on Thursday and Friday.

The weather pattern is not expected to change significantly during the rest of the week. An orange alert has already been issued for heavy rainfall.

On Thursday, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 27.3 degrees Celsius, which is 0.6 degrees above normal. The maximum temperature is expected to reach 31.1 degrees Celsius, around 1.5 degrees below normal. 

Heavy rain forecast for south Bengal from July 4 

Rainfall over south Bengal is likely to remain light to moderate on Thursday and Friday. As a result, humid conditions may continue in several districts.

However, weather conditions are expected to become more active from the weekend. The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across Gangetic south Bengal between July 4 and July 8 under the influence of the developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.  The wet spell may also be accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.

Coastal districts on alert 

The approaching weather system has prompted a special alert for coastal districts of West Bengal. With sea conditions expected to turn rough, authorities have urged fishermen to remain cautious before venturing into the sea.

North Bengal weather update 

North Bengal is likely to get temporary relief after the recent spell of adverse weather.

The IMD has not issued any major weather warning for the region at present. Even so, light to moderate rainfall is expected to continue across north Bengal over the next couple of days.
