Global Peace Index 2026

In the 20th edition of the Global Peace Index, the list ranks 163 independent states and territories, covering 99.7% of the world population.

In this process, the Index uses 23 “qualitative and quantitative indicators” to measure peace across three key areas: societal safety and security, ongoing domestic and international conflict and militarisation. The most peaceful country has the lowest final score.

In 2026 as well, Iceland came first, followed by New Zealand, Switzerland, Slovenia and Ireland. The European continent has 7 of the top 10 most peaceful countries in the world. The report noted that, “Western and Central Europe remains the most peaceful region in the world on the 2026 GPI,” according to Times of India.

Why does Iceland dominate this Index?

Times of India noted that Iceland’s score of 1.61 confirmed its increase in peacefulness by 2% over the past year. Iceland’s safety and security ranking and its militarisation ranking improved by 4% and 0.3% respectively.

Despite being a NATO member, Iceland does not have a standing army, navy or air force and its maritime security relies on the specialised Icelandic Coast Guard and a voluntary Crisis Response Unit for International peacekeeping.

Crime rates are one of the lowest, with serious crime being uncommon. Logreglan, the police force, is largely unarmed during routine patrols.

The country is an extremely family friendly destination where air is pure, clean and cold. Even the tap water in the country is glacial and can be consumed freely.

Being a progressive country, Iceland is LGBTQ+ friendly and it has topped the Global Gender Gap Report 2026 for the 16th year in a row, gaining international recognition for gender equality. The residents have developed a strong trust and shared responsibility, making them welcoming guests.

The country is very appropriate for people who want to explore the rawness of nature without feeling isolated from humanity.
