Move over the golden retriever boyfriend. A new relationship archetype is gaining attention online: the Black Cat Boyfriend.
The term has become increasingly popular on social media, with fans using it to describe fictional characters and real-life partners who are quiet, reserved and emotionally selective. Unlike the outgoing and openly affectionate “golden retriever boyfriend”, the Black Cat Boyfriend is often seen as mysterious, independent and harder to read.
Describing the trend, relationship coach Amie Leadingham told Cosmopolitan, “A black cat boyfriend is the mysterious, slightly moody counterpart to a golden retriever boyfriend.”

What does a Black Cat Boyfriend mean?
Dating expert Michelle Herzog says the personality is inspired by the traits commonly associated with black cats.
“A black cat boyfriend embodies that mysterious, brooding energy we see in characters like Jess Mariano from Gilmore Girls or Conrad from The Summer I Turned Pretty,” Herzog told Cosmopolitan.
She adds, “Think of the guy who is intensely loyal to his inner circle but keeps most people at arm’s length. He’s often quiet, observant, and has this magnetic pull that makes you want to figure him out.”
According to Herzog, these partners are typically independent, prefer smaller social circles and often keep their emotions private despite caring deeply about the people close to them.
How do they show affection?
Despite their reserved nature, Black Cat Boyfriends are not necessarily emotionally distant.
Herzog explains they are “affectionate on their own terms and selective with their attention.”
Per Cosmopolitan, dating coach Grace Lee adds, “He’s not the guy flooding your phone with love-bomb texts or booking a flashy dinner just to prove something. His love isn’t loud. It’s quiet, cautious, and deliberate.”
Is dating a Black Cat Boyfriend a good thing?
Experts say there are both strengths and challenges.
Herzog says, “They’re often fiercely loyal, intellectually stimulating, and bring a sense of depth and authenticity to relationships.” However, she also cautions that what appears to be mystery can sometimes reflect “poor communication skills” or “avoidant attachment.”
Grace Lee also points out that “Black cat energy might actually be disinterest. What seems mysterious might actually be a guy who just isn’t that into you.”

Who is the best match?
According to Leadingham, Black Cat Boyfriends are generally better suited to people who are confident and comfortable giving relationships time to develop.
As Grace Lee puts it, “There’s a reason dogs are the world’s favorite pet: their love is open, immediate, and easy to read. Cats—and black cat boyfriends—ask more of us. They require time, attentiveness, and faith in the quiet signs. For the right person, though, that kind of love feels rare, steady, and worth holding onto.”
