Pakistan has once again turned to Babar Azam for Test captain duties after removing Shan Masood from the leadership role following a disappointing run in red-ball cricket. The Pakistan Cricket Board announced the change while naming its squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against the West Indies later this month. The decision marks Babar Azam’s second stint as Test captain at the helm, with selectors hoping his return can revive Pakistan’s struggling fortunes in the longest format.

Babar Azam Test captain again after Pakistan’s poor run

The leadership change follows one of the most difficult phases in Pakistan’s Test history. Shan Masood led the side in sixteen Test matches but managed only four victories while suffering twelve defeats. Pakistan also lost their last seven Tests, equalling their longest losing streak in the format.

Pakistan’s High Performance Director Aaqib Javed said repeated failures to close out winning positions convinced the selectors that a change was necessary. He pointed to missed opportunities against South Africa and the West Indies, where Pakistan allowed crucial partnerships to slip the game away.

According to Aaqib, Shan Masood performed well individually with the bat but could not deliver the results expected from a captain.

Why Pakistan has returned to Babar Azam

The decision to appoint Babar Azam as Test captain reflects both his previous success in the role and the limited alternatives available. During his first stint as captain, Pakistan won ten of the twenty Test matches under his leadership, including memorable away series victories in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Babar’s personal batting form was also stronger while leading the side, averaging above fifty in Test cricket as captain. Although his performances have dipped in recent years, the selectors believe his leadership experience can help stabilise the dressing room during a demanding Test calendar.

The move separates Babar’s appointment from Shan Masood’s place in the playing eleven, with the latter retaining his spot based on recent batting performances.

Busy schedule awaits Pakistan’s new skipper

The return of Babar Azam as Test captain comes ahead of a crucial stretch for Pakistan. The West Indies series will be followed by a three-match Test tour of England before Pakistan hosts New Zealand and Sri Lanka during the home season.

The leadership change also signals Pakistan’s intention to improve its standing in the new World Test Championship cycle after finishing at the bottom of the previous edition.

With expectations once again resting on one of Pakistan’s biggest cricketing stars, Babar Azam, the Test captain will now have the task of rebuilding confidence, ending the losing streak and restoring Pakistan’s reputation as a competitive Test side.
