England vs Mexico is all set to feature an unusual option ahead of their FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash. Under World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) rules, players are allowed to use Viagra to help deal with the effects of high altitude, though there is no indication the team plans to do so.

High altitude adds to England’s challenge

England will face Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, which is located about 2,240 metres (7,350 feet) above sea level. The thin air at that altitude can make breathing more difficult, reduce stamina and slow recovery, creating an extra challenge for visiting teams.

England manager Thomas Tuchel has acknowledged the difficulties of playing in such conditions. The squad has adjusted its travel plans to arrive earlier in Mexico City, hoping to get some time to adapt before the knockout match. However, experts say full acclimatisation to high altitude usually takes much longer than a few days.

Why is Viagra being mentioned in the England vs Mexico clash?

Viagra, known medically as sildenafil, was originally developed to treat high blood pressure. It relaxes blood vessels and improves blood flow, including to the lungs, leading researchers to study whether it can help athletes perform better at high altitudes.

The medication is not banned by WADA, meaning athletes can use it if medically required. Some studies suggest sildenafil may improve oxygen delivery in extreme high-altitude conditions, although its benefits at the elevation of Mexico City remain limited.

There is no suggestion that England are considering using Viagra as part of their preparations. The discussion has emerged only because the drug is permitted under anti-doping rules and has previously been linked to research on altitude performance.

England’s focus remains on overcoming the demanding conditions and Mexico’s home advantage. Playing at the Azteca has long been considered one of the toughest assignments in international football, and Tuchel’s side will need to produce a disciplined performance if they are to secure a place in the World Cup quarter-finals.
