Mohun Bagan Super Giants have officially announced the appointment of Greek tactician Panagiotis Dilmperis as their new head coach on a one-year contract ahead of the 2026-27 Indian Super League (ISL) season.

The 51-year-old ‘Panos’ takes charge after an impressive campaign with Punjab FC and arrives with the reputation of building competitive teams through disciplined, attacking football. Speaking for the reporters after signing his contract, Dilmperis outlined his footballing philosophy, expectations for the squad, his excitement for the Kolkata Derby, and his ambition to continue Mohun Bagan’s winning legacy.

Panos backs a balanced squad and a winning mentality

Dilmperis earned widespread recognition during his stint with Punjab FC, where he transformed a relatively modest squad into one of the league’s most competitive teams. By blending emerging Indian youngsters with experienced professionals and overseas signings, he implemented an attractive yet balanced style of football that caught the attention of Mohun Bagan’s management.

Explaining why he chose to accept the offer from the reigning ISL champions, the Greek coach said the club’s stature made the decision an easy one. “Mohun Bagan is much more than a football club; it is an institution with a remarkable history, a winning culture and one of the most passionate fanbases in Asia.”

“I believe we have a strong and talented squad with a good balance of experience and quality. Every coach always looks for ways to improve, but my focus is on maximising the potential of the players we have,” he added.

He stressed that winning trophies depends on far more than individual talent. “Success comes not only from individual talent but from creating a united team with the right mentality, discipline and commitment,” Panos said.

‘At big clubs,’ says new coach

Taking charge of one of India’s biggest football clubs comes with enormous expectations, but Dilmperis insisted he welcomes the challenge rather than fearing it.

Quoting a famous saying, he explained that pressure is simply part of representing a club with Mohun Bagan’s stature. “There is a saying, ‘Pressure is a privilege.’ At big clubs, expectations are always high, and that is exactly how it should be.”

The coach acknowledged the unwavering support of the Green and Maroon faithful, describing the supporters as one of the club’s greatest strengths. “Our responsibility is to earn their trust every day through hard work, professionalism and performances that reflect the values of this great club.”

While refusing to guarantee victories every week, Dilmperis assured fans they would always see a side committed to giving everything on the pitch.

“We cannot promise victories every week, but we can promise a team that competes with courage, discipline and the desire to win every match.”

Ready for the Kolkata Derby

One of the first major tests awaiting the new coach could be the iconic Kolkata Derby, a fixture that carries immense significance for players, coaches and supporters alike.

Although he is yet to experience the rivalry firsthand, Dilmperis said he already understands its importance.

“Football is built on great rivalries and the Kolkata Derby is one of the biggest and the most historic in world football.”

Rather than allowing emotions to dictate preparations, the Greek tactician wants his players to approach the contest with discipline and confidence.

“The best way to prepare for such a match is not with emotions alone, but with excellent preparation, discipline and confidence. We will respect our opponents, but we will also play with courage and with the ambition expected from Mohun Bagan.”

Dilmperis also admitted that despite managing clubs with demanding supporters in the past, Mohun Bagan presents a unique challenge. “You can feel that this is more than football—it is identity, pride and tradition. That makes this challenge very special and I am excited to experience that atmosphere firsthand.”

Every trophy remains the target

Mohun Bagan head into the new season after establishing themselves as one of Indian football’s dominant forces, having consistently challenged for major honours in recent years.

Dilmperis made it clear that maintaining those standards would be his primary objective. “When you coach Mohun Bagan, the objective is always to compete for every trophy.”

He praised the club’s recent achievements but insisted every campaign demands a fresh approach.

“We respect what has already been achieved because winning consecutive championships is never easy. Now our responsibility is to maintain those standards and continue building a team that plays attractive, disciplined and winning football.”

The coach concluded by addressing the Mohun Bagan supporters directly, promising complete commitment from himself, his coaching staff and the players throughout the campaign.

“To all the Mohun Bagan supporters, I know how much this club means to you and I understand the responsibility that comes with wearing these colours. Together with the management, my staff and the players, we will work every single day to make you proud.”

He also underlined the importance of fan support in achieving success.

“We will need your energy because football is always stronger when the team and its supporters move as one.”

With the ISL 2026-27 season fast approaching, Mohun Bagan will hope Dilmperis’ blend of tactical discipline, attacking football and emphasis on unity can help the club continue its remarkable run of success while adding more silverware to an already glittering trophy cabinet.
