The Netherlands’ FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign ended in disappointment after a penalty shootout defeat to Morocco in the Round of 32, leaving head coach Ronald Koeman uncertain about his future. While speculation over his resignation has intensified, Koeman said he is yet to decide whether he will continue in charge of the Dutch national team.
Koeman to decide future after World Cup exit
The Netherlands were eliminated after drawing 1-1 with Morocco before losing 3-2 in the penalty shootout. Cody Gakpo had put the Dutch ahead, but Morocco equalised deep into stoppage time through Issa Diop to force extra time and eventually penalties.

Following the defeat, Koeman admitted it was too early to make a decision about his future. He said emotions were still fresh and that he would take time to evaluate everything before announcing whether he would remain as head coach.

The 63-year-old returned for his second spell as Netherlands manager in 2023 and guided the team into the World Cup with high expectations.
Dutch coach defends tactical approach
Koeman also defended his tactical setup after facing criticism for using a more defensive formation against Morocco. He said the system was chosen to limit Morocco’s attacking threats and believed it worked for large parts of the match.

Despite the criticism, Koeman insisted he had no regrets over his approach and felt his players executed the game plan well until the late equaliser.
