World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka admitted she was deeply disappointed after her Wimbledon 2026 campaign ended with a straight-set defeat to Naomi Osaka. The Belarusian said she fell short of her own expectations and now plans to take time to recover mentally before returning to competition.
Aryna Sabalenka accepts responsibility for defeat
Aryna Sabalenka’s dream of winning her first Wimbledon title came to an unexpected end after Naomi Osaka defeated her 6-2, 7-6(2) in the fourth round. The top seed struggled to match Osaka’s intensity as the Japanese star controlled the match with powerful serving and aggressive baseline play.
It’s a shame she doesn’t have enough “big” titles to show for it, but my word, what a player Aryna Sabalenka is. Her dominance over the past 3+ years has been incredible. https://t.co/NrPk80onAU— root 🐂🀄 (@redactedroot) July 5, 2026
Speaking after the defeat, Sabalenka admitted to the reporters, ” “No emotions. Just know that I can handle myself much better than last year. ” She also added, ““Obviously, guys, if you were expecting something really fun, not going to happen. Probably just going to be short answers. “I fucked it up this year. Next year I’ll try to do better. I just think, to be honest, I feel like my level was really low today, plus she was feeling her best. With every game we would play, I would feel worse, she would feel better.”
The loss also marked Sabalenka’s earliest exit from a Grand Slam since the 2022 French Open and her first straight-sets defeat at a major tournament in several years.
Focus shifts to recovery and the hard-court season
Despite the disappointment, Sabalenka remained positive about the future. She said her priority is to recover mentally before beginning preparations for the upcoming hard-court swing.
The World No. 1 admitted the defeat was painful but stressed that every setback offers a chance to learn and improve. She added, “I feel like I just don’t even want to think about rankings at this point. I just want to go, get completely drunk, forget about tennis, and try to get in better shape.”

For Osaka, the victory was another significant step in her comeback. The four-time Grand Slam champion delivered one of her finest performances since returning to the tour, reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time in her career.
Sabalenka’s exit also means her wait for a maiden Wimbledon title continues. After reaching the latter stages of several Grand Slams in recent years, the Belarusian will now turn her attention to the North American hard-court season, where she hopes to regain momentum and challenge for more titles before the US Open.
