A fresh spell of rain is set to keep Kolkata and large parts of South Bengal wet over the coming days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning that rainfall could become more intense during the weekend.

According to the weather office, a strong low-pressure area is likely to develop over the Bay of Bengal between July 4 and July 8. The system is expected to strengthen as it moves towards the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh, raising the possibility of widespread rain across the region.

Kolkata under yellow alert as rain and thunderstorms continue 

Kolkata woke up to a partly cloudy sky on Wednesday, with limited sunshine through the morning. The IMD has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by rain across the city and the rest of South Bengal during the day.

The weather department has issued a yellow alert for Kolkata, warning of rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds. It has also indicated that rainfall activity is likely to increase as the week progresses.

On Wednesday, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 26.4 degrees Celsius, which is 0.3 degrees below normal. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 31.2 degrees Celsius, 1.4 degrees above normal.

Heavy rain forecast for South Bengal districts 

The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in several parts of South Bengal throughout the week. 

On Wednesday, Jhargram and Paschim Medinipur are expected to receive heavy rain. Meanwhile, all districts of South Bengal remain under a yellow alert for thunderstorms, lightning, rain and gusty winds.

Coastal districts may receive more rain 

The weather office has said rainfall could become more widespread and intense towards the weekend as the low-pressure system develops over the Bay of Bengal.

The coastal districts are expected to be among the areas that may see the strongest impact. In view of the changing weather conditions, fishermen have also been advised to remain cautious while venturing into the sea. 

With the low-pressure system likely to strengthen over the next few days, residents across Kolkata and South Bengal can expect continued wet weather and intermittent thunderstorms through the week.
