England produced a commanding all-round performance to thrash India by 125 runs in the T20I at Trent Bridge, inflicting one of the heaviest defeats in India’s history in the shortest format. Chasing a daunting 202-run target, India were bundled out for just 76 in 11.4 overs as Josh Tongue and the England attack ran through the batting order. The crushing loss also saw India register several unwanted records, including their second-lowest total in T20I history.

England hammers India with dominant batting display

Asked to bat first, England piled up 201/7 from their 20 overs after an explosive start from Phil Salt. The opener smashed 70 off just 44 balls, striking seven fours and three sixes to lay the platform. Captain Jos Buttler chipped in with a brisk 36, while Sam Curran remained unbeaten on 41 from 24 deliveries to push the hosts past the 200-run mark.

India’s bowlers struggled for consistency throughout the innings. Harshit Rana claimed two wickets, while Prince Yadav picked up two scalps. Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakravarthy and Shivam Dube managed one wicket each, but England’s aggressive batting ensured they finished with a formidable total.

India rattles down in disastrous chase

India’s chase never got going as wickets fell at regular intervals. Abhishek Sharma top-scored with just 23, while Vaibhav Suryavanshi (13) and Ishan Kishan (13) were the only other batters to reach double figures.

Josh Tongue starred with the ball, returning remarkable figures of 4/28, while Jofra Archer claimed 3/29. Adil Rashid chipped in with two wickets and Will Jacks took one as India folded for 76 in only 11.4 overs, handing England a comprehensive victory.

Records tumble in Trent Bridge rout

The defeat entered the record books for all the wrong reasons. India’s total of 76 became their second-lowest in T20Is, behind the 74 they managed against Australia in 2008.

It was also India’s biggest-ever defeat by runs in T20 internationals, surpassing the previous record of an 80-run loss to New Zealand in 2019. The innings marked India’s fifth consecutive winless T20I, their longest such streak in the format.

For England, Tongue’s 4/28 became the third-best four-wicket haul by an England bowler against India in T20Is, while India’s 76 was also the fifth-lowest all-out total ever recorded against England in men’s T20 internationals.
