Morocco fought back from the brink of elimination to defeat the Netherlands 3-2 in a penalty shootout after a thrilling 1-1 draw following extra time in Monterrey. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou and match-winner Ismael Saibari starred as the Atlas Lions booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

The Netherlands looked set to progress after taking the lead midway through the second half. Cody Gakpo found the net after connecting with Crysencio Summerville’s low cross, putting the Dutch ahead in a fiercely contested knockout clash. The goal came just days after Gakpo and his partner suffered the loss of their unborn child, making the moment especially emotional.

Morocco, however, continued to push forward after creating the better chances for much of the contest. Bart Verbruggen produced several excellent saves to deny Achraf Hakimi, Neil El Aynaoui and Soufiane Rahimi, keeping the Dutch in front.

Just when the Netherlands seemed destined for victory, Morocco struck deep into stoppage time. Issa Diop rose unmarked to head home Chemsdine Talbi’s cross, sending the match into extra time and reviving Morocco’s hopes.

Extra time delivered more end-to-end action, with Rahimi coming closest to finding a winner before Verbruggen made another outstanding save to preserve the deadlock.

The penalty shootout began with El Aynaoui missing Morocco’s first attempt, but the momentum quickly shifted. Yassine Bounou produced the decisive moment by saving Crysencio Summerville’s penalty, handing Morocco the advantage.

Ismael Saibari then confidently converted the winning spot-kick to complete a dramatic 3-2 shootout triumph, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Moroccan players and supporters.
The victory sends Morocco into the Round of 16, where they will face Canada, while the Netherlands exit the tournament after surrendering their lead in heartbreaking fashion.
