Cape Verde’s dream run at the FIFA World Cup 2026 produced another unforgettable moment when Sidny Lopes Cabral scored a sensational extra-time equaliser against Argentina in the Round of 16 clash in Miami on Friday.

With Argentina leading after Lisandro Martinez found the net from a set piece in the first half of extra time, Cape Verde looked set for heartbreak. But Cabral had other plans. In the 103rd minute, the 23-year-old produced a stunning strike from outside the box to make it 2-2 and briefly reignite hopes of one of the biggest upsets of the tournament. Argentina eventually edged the contest 3-2.

A goal that grabbed the world’s attention

Cabral received the ball on the left flank with his back to goal before turning inside past Alexis Mac Allister. From the edge of the penalty area, he curled a powerful right-footed effort beyond Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez into the far top corner.
