England have strengthened security arrangements ahead of their FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash against hosts Mexico after concerns over possible fan attempts to disrupt the team’s preparations.

The move follows reports that Ecuador’s players were kept awake the night before their knockout match against Mexico as hundreds of supporters gathered outside the team’s hotel, creating noise with drums, chants and fireworks. The incident prompted England to take additional precautions before Sunday’s crucial fixture.

England increase security measures

The Football Association has reportedly kept the team’s hotel location confidential and is working closely with local authorities to ensure player safety. Extra police personnel have been deployed around the hotel to prevent large gatherings and unauthorised access.

Players have also been provided with earplugs and eye masks to minimise any disturbance if supporters attempt to recreate the scenes that affected Ecuador before their match.

England are expected to travel to the stadium under a secure police escort as part of the enhanced security plan.

Focus remains on Mexico challenge

Apart from security concerns, England are also preparing for the challenge of playing in Mexico City’s high altitude, which stands more than 2,200 metres above sea level. The squad arrived early to give players enough time to adjust to the conditions.

England, meanwhile, booked their place in the knockout stage with a victory over DR Congo and will hope the additional security measures allow the squad to focus entirely on the match.

Officials are also keeping an eye on the weather, with thunderstorms forecast around kickoff. If conditions worsen, FIFA could make adjustments to the match schedule.

With a place in the quarter-finals at stake, England are leaving nothing to chance, both on and off the pitch, as they prepare for one of their biggest tests of the tournament.
