Brazil’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign came to a disappointing end after a 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 16. Carlo Ancelotti’s side enjoyed more possession and created several chances but failed to make them count. Norway capitalised on Brazil’s mistakes to book a place in the quarter-finals. Here are the three key reasons behind Brazil’s exit.
Missed penalty changed the game
Brazil had the ideal chance to take control of the match after being awarded a first-half penalty. Bruno Guimaraes stepped up but saw his effort saved by Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland. The miss shifted the momentum and gave Norway confidence.

After the match, Ancelotti explained that Guimaraes was chosen because he had the best penalty record in the squad, despite questions over why Vinicius Junior did not take the spot-kick.
Poor finishing in front of goal
Brazil created enough opportunities to win the match but failed to convert them. Vinicius Junior looked dangerous throughout the game, while Endrick and other attackers also missed promising chances. Their wasteful finishing allowed Norway to stay in the contest before punishing Brazil on the counter. Neymar’s injury-time penalty came too late to change the result.
Late defensive collapse
Brazil defended well for most of the match but lost focus in the closing stages. Norway striker Erling Haaland scored twice in the final minutes to complete a stunning comeback. Brazil struggled to deal with quick transitions and failed to contain Norway when it mattered most. Those defensive lapses ultimately ended the five-time champions’ World Cup campaign.

Brazil’s early exit once again highlighted familiar problems in knockout football. Missed chances, costly mistakes and a lack of composure under pressure proved decisive as Ancelotti’s side fell short of reaching the quarter-finals. The defeat also extended Brazil’s wait for a sixth FIFA World Cup title and will likely trigger serious questions about the team’s direction ahead of the next World Cup cycle.
