England reached the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals after defeating Mexico 3-2 in a thrilling Round of 16 clash at the Estadio Azteca. Jude Bellingham starred with two first-half goals, while Harry Kane’s second-half penalty proved decisive as England held on despite playing with 10 men for more than 35 minutes.

After a brief weather delay, both teams started brightly, with Mexico creating the first clear opportunity. However, England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made an important save to keep the score level.

England broke the deadlock in the 36th minute when Jude Bellingham headed home Bukayo Saka’s cross. Less than two minutes later, Bellingham struck again, finishing a well-worked move to give England a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Mexico responded before half-time through Julian Quinones, who finished from close range after England failed to clear the ball. The goal reduced the deficit to 2-1 and gave the hosts renewed hope heading into the break.
Kane seals victory after England go down to 10 men
England suffered a major setback early in the second half when defender Jarell Quansah was shown a straight red card following a VAR review for a challenge on Jesus Gallardo.

Despite being a man down, England extended their lead in the 59th minute. Anthony Gordon won a penalty after being fouled by goalkeeper Raul Rangel, and Harry Kane confidently converted from the spot to make it 3-1.
Mexico continued to fight and were awarded a penalty after Kane was penalised for a foul inside the box. Raul Jimenez converted the spot-kick to bring the score to 3-2.
The hosts pushed hard for an equaliser during a lengthy period of stoppage time, but England defended well to protect their lead. The victory sends England into the quarter-finals, where they will face Norway, who knocked out Brazil in the previous round.
Mexico’s campaign ends in the Round of 16 despite a spirited performance in front of their home fans, while England remain in contention for their first World Cup title since 1966.
