The United States is set to celebrate its 250th Independence Day with large-scale events across the country, headlined by a major gathering in Washington, DC, where President Donald Trump is expected to address the nation.

Trump will attend a “spectacular rally” on the National Mall on Saturday as part of the Salute to America 250 Celebrations & Fireworks, an event organised by a White House-backed public-private partnership.

Flyovers and record-breaking fireworks planned

Military aircraft are scheduled to fly over Washington every hour from 1:15 pm local time until sunset. One of the formations will feature Trump’s new Air Force One, BBC reported.

The celebrations are expected to conclude with what organisers say could become the largest official fireworks display ever.

According to organisers quoted by BBC, around 8,50,000 fireworks will be launched from 10 locations across the city, including eight barges positioned on the Potomac River. The display is expected to last 40 minutes, about twice the duration of a typical Fourth of July fireworks show.

Organisers are also aiming to secure a Guinness World Record by surpassing the current record set in the Philippines in 2016.

Trump to deliver a ‘really long speech’

Speaking earlier this week in North Dakota, Trump told supporters he planned to make a “really long speech” during the celebrations “to show that I can do anything”.

His address is expected to begin at around 9:45 pm local time, with the fireworks display following immediately after, per BBC report.

Weather and pollution concerns

The celebrations may face challenges from weather conditions, with temperatures expected to touch around 38°C (100°F). Forecasts quoted by BBC have also warned of possible evening thunderstorms that could affect outdoor events.

Internal National Park Service documents, obtained by several US media outlets, reportedly warned that the large fireworks display could create “very unhealthy” air quality in central Washington.

Political debate over the celebrations

The event has also attracted political attention. Critics have accused the White House-backed Freedom250 group of overshadowing the bipartisan America250 commission established by Congress.

Per BBC, California Democratic Senator Alex Padilla said, “President Trump couldn’t help but try making America’s 250th birthday all about himself,” during a June 24 hearing.

Freedom250 rejected the criticism, calling it a “partisan smear” by politicians seeking to score “political points” instead of celebrating the country’s historic milestone.

Celebrations are also planned in New York and Philadelphia, with concerts, fireworks and special events marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
